During Operation Sindoor, the Indian government actively tackled a surge of misinformation and propaganda by Pakistani sources. Using its Fact Check Unit, the government’s efforts focused on detecting fake content, blocking harmful URLs, and disseminating verified updates efficiently.

Swift Government Action Against Misinformation During Operation Sindoor

Throughout Operation Sindoor, the Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check Unit (PIB FCU) operated round the clock. The mission was clear: identify and counter anti-India fake news and edited digital content originating predominantly from Pakistan-based handles. Over 1,400 URLs were blocked under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000, all found spreading misleading and inciteful narratives threatening national security.

Multi-Agency Coordination Boosted Real-Time Response

A dedicated Control Room was established, enabling 24x7 coordination between the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and media arms of the government. This allowed seamless data flow and real-time rebuttals to propaganda. Details about military operations, backed with satellite images and visual evidence, were shared through periodic briefings, ensuring the public and media remained informed with credible updates.

Advisory Issued to National Media Channels

On April 26, 2025, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a strict advisory to all media outlets. It instructed them to avoid live coverage of defence movements, recognising the risks these broadcasts could pose during active operations. This directive aimed to safeguard strategic military information and national security during heightened tensions.

Conclusion

The Indian government's proactive measures during Operation Sindoor underline its commitment to combat digital misinformation. With extensive coordination and factual updates, over 1,400 misleading URLs were neutralised, ensuring accurate narratives prevailed across media and public platforms.
