The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced an innovative step under the ‘Swachh Rajmarg’ campaign that rewards users with ₹1,000 in FASTag credit for reporting unclean toilets along national highways. This digital initiative aims to ensure cleaner, safer public convenience facilities across the country’s vast road network.
Launched on October 10, 2025, the drive incentivises users to report unhygienic toilets located at toll plazas and wayside amenities. With over 1,300 toilet blocks monitored for maintenance every 40 to 60 kilometres, users can lodge complaints through the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app available in English, Hindi, and 13 regional languages. Issues such as water shortage, littering, or faulty maintenance can be flagged by uploading photos and details.
Each complaint is analysed using AI tools and field team inspections within 48 hours. Once verified, a ₹1,000 reward is credited instantly to the complainant’s My FASTag wallet. Only 1 reward per user per month is allowed, and a functional FASTag account must be linked to their verified app profile. The programme ensures transparency and encourages timely corrective actions.
Since its phased rollout in September 2025, the campaign has drawn over 5,000 entries and triggered remedial actions at more than 200 locations nationwide. Positive feedback from truck drivers and families reflects its utility in transforming roadside sanitation standards. The initiative also ties in with the broader Swachh Bharat Mission goals to achieve hygiene excellence across India’s public spaces.

A 24x7 helpline (1033) has been provided for assistance. The NHAI has partnered with Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) to support swift wallet recharges, along with plans to integrate this with the FASTag Annual Pass system for frequent travellers.
The NHAI’s cleanliness drive reimagines public engagement on national highways. With AI monitoring, verified reporting, and reward-based participation, the initiative represents a milestone in India’s journey towards improved sanitation infrastructure and citizen-inclusive governance.
