Mumbai witnessed significant disruption on Monday as heavy monsoon rainfall and strong winds affected transport and airport operations across the city. Flight services at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) faced cancellations and delays due to adverse weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby districts as intense rainfall continued. The weather-related impact extended beyond aviation, affecting roads, rail services and highway connectivity.

Mumbai Airport Flight Delays and Cancellations Due to Heavy Rain

Flight operations at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were affected by persistent rainfall and gusty winds. As of 11:30 AM on Monday, 17 flights had been cancelled while 217 flights experienced delays.

Adverse weather conditions reduced operational efficiency and increased turnaround times for airlines. Passengers travelling through one of India's busiest airports faced disruptions throughout the day.

IMD Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, indicating the highest level of weather warning. The alert remains in effect through Tuesday as the monsoon system strengthens over western Maharashtra.

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been forecast across the affected districts. Authorities have been monitoring conditions closely due to the possibility of flooding, waterlogging and transportation disruptions.

Sunday Runway Suspension at Mumbai Airport

The latest disruption followed operational challenges witnessed on Sunday at the airport. Heavy rain and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 42 knots forced airport authorities to temporarily suspend runway operations.

The suspension lasted for 1 hour, from 10:17 AM. The temporary closure affected flight schedules and contributed to the broader disruption seen over the subsequent day.

Mumbai Rains Impact Roads, Railways and Highway Traffic

Continuous downpours across Mumbai and its suburbs have led to widespread waterlogging in several areas. Suburban railway services faced disruptions after tracks were inundated in locations such as Nalasopara and Vasai.

Low-lying regions in Raigad also witnessed flooding, affecting the movement of vehicles. Traffic on the Mumbai-Goa highway was impacted as water accumulation disrupted normal road connectivity.

Conclusion

The ongoing monsoon activity has significantly affected transportation infrastructure across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Flight operations at CSMIA experienced both cancellations and delays as heavy rainfall continued to impact airport functioning.

Simultaneously, rail services, road traffic and highway movement faced disruptions due to flooding and waterlogging. The red alert issued by the IMD highlights the severity of the weather conditions currently affecting Mumbai and neighbouring districts.
