On July 11, 2026, INS Mahendragiri, an advanced stealth frigate constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam. This event marks a pivotal moment in India's maritime security and indigenous defence capabilities. 

INS Mahendragiri: A Leap in Indigenous Naval Engineering 

INS Mahendragiri, the fourth ship of the Nilgiri class stealth frigates, was designed under Project 17A. The Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai) ensured adherence to stringent naval standards. 

Measuring 149 metres in length and 17.8 metres in breadth, with a displacement of approximately 6,400 tonnes, INS Mahendragiri is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system. This includes 2 Gas Turbines and 2 Main Diesel Engines, enabling speeds exceeding 28 knots.

The vessel integrates state-of-the-art stealth technology, advanced weapon systems, and modern sensors. Its induction will enhance the Indian Navy’s surveillance capabilities and operational reach across the Indian Ocean Region.

Efficiency in Shipbuilding 

The construction of INS Mahendragiri achieved a 21% reduction in build period compared to the First-of-Class vessel. MDL, in collaboration with the Indian Navy and the Warship Overseeing Team, completed Sea Trials and Final Machinery Trials within 2 months of Basin Trials. 

Commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat 

With approximately 75% indigenous content, the commissioning of INS Mahendragiri underscores MDL's commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and Make in India initiatives. The project involved collaboration with Indian industries, including numerous MSMEs, promoting innovation and employment.
