Indian Railways is gearing up for the peak summer season by unveiling 18,262 special train trips. This initiative aims to manage the surge in passenger traffic and ensure better connectivity across high-demand routes as the summer travel window opens.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the plan for operating these special trains in New Delhi. Scheduled to run from April 15 to July 15, 2026, these trains will address the sharp rise in passenger volumes, particularly as people travel to their hometowns.
The Ministry has focused on a large-scale, calibrated approach to maximise rake availability, optimise scheduling, and maintain continuous monitoring throughout the travel period.
Significant efforts are being made to streamline operations at major stations like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Authorities are employing real-time crowd management and enhanced on-ground support to reduce congestion and improve the passenger experience.
Western Railway, for example, has implemented crowd-control measures at Udhna station with coordinated efforts between staff and the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
The objective of this expansive operation is to ensure smooth passenger movement across high-demand routes. By utilising enhanced station arrangements, authorities aim to facilitate smoother and safer boarding experiences, especially for passengers returning to their hometowns.
