The Maharashtra government has approved a special incentive allowance for police officers and personnel serving in the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), according to a CNBC TV18 report. The allowance will be equivalent to 30% of an employee's basic pay under the 7th Pay Commission framework.
The decision has been taken in view of the operational risks involved in anti-narcotics enforcement activities. The government said the measure is intended to attract experienced and capable officers to the specialised force.
According to a Government Resolution issued by the Home Department, ANTF personnel will receive a special incentive allowance equal to 30% of their basic pay. The benefit has been introduced as compensation for the hazardous nature of anti-narcotics assignments.
However, no other allowances will be calculated on the incentive amount. The allowance will cease once an officer or personnel is transferred back to their parent cadre or unit.
The government noted that ANTF personnel are routinely involved in covert operations, raids and investigations targeting drug trafficking networks. These operations often involve action against organised crime groups and international narcotics syndicates.
Authorities stated that such duties expose officers to significant operational and personal risks. The incentive aims to recognise the challenges associated with these specialised responsibilities.
The Government Resolution highlighted that officers handling narcotic substances may face serious physical and psychological harm during the course of their duties. Anti-drug operations frequently require personnel to work in high-pressure environments and engage with dangerous criminal networks.
The government said these factors distinguish narcotics enforcement from many conventional policing assignments. The special allowance is intended to reflect the unique risks attached to such work.
The decision follows an announcement by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly earlier this week. Fadnavis stated that similar incentives are already available for personnel serving in sensitive assignments such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district.
He also acknowledged that narcotics units had historically not always attracted the most sought-after postings within the police force. The government is examining additional measures, including a special pay component and a one-step promotion policy for ANTF personnel.

Maharashtra's approval of a 30% special incentive allowance for ANTF personnel marks a significant policy measure for officers engaged in anti-drug enforcement. The government has linked the decision to the operational, physical and psychological risks associated with tackling narcotics-related crimes.
The allowance will be paid on basic pay and will remain applicable only during an officer's tenure in the specialised unit. The state is also considering further incentives to strengthen the force and attract skilled personnel to anti-narcotics operations.
