Within hours of taking charge, Kerala’s Government cleared a set of welfare and governance measures focused on public support schemes, worker benefits, and administrative restructuring.

Women Travel Scheme and Elderly Welfare Take Centre Stage

As per PTI news report, one of the biggest announcements made by V D Satheesan, Chief Minister of Kerala, was the launch of free travel for women in KSRTC buses from June 15.

While operational guidelines will be issued later, the move is expected to become one of the first major public welfare initiatives of the new government.

The Cabinet also approved the creation of a separate department dedicated to elderly welfare. Satheesan said Kerala should become a benchmark for dignified senior citizen care and indicated that this could become the country’s first standalone department focused entirely on elderly citizens.

ASHA Workers And Anganwadi Staff Receive Higher Payouts

The government also moved quickly on long-pending honorarium demands.

ASHA workers will receive an additional ₹3,000 per month following months of agitation linked to wage-related issues.

Monthly payouts were also increased by ₹1,000 for Anganwadi workers and helpers, school cooking staff, pre-primary teachers and ayahs.

The decisions signal the government’s early focus on strengthening welfare support for grassroots service workers across the state.
