Karnataka will establish India's first government-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) University, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced on July 14, 2026, at Google I/O Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru, as per news reports.
The university will be built on a 100-acre campus in the city and will have regional campuses in Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, and Mysuru.
According to the state government, the institution will focus on AI education, research and skill development while encouraging collaboration between universities, industry and government agencies.
The government also announced an AI Hub, which will function as a common platform for startups, companies, researchers, and educational institutions working in artificial intelligence.
In addition, Karnataka plans to introduce a state AI Policy to provide a framework for AI-related investment, research, and business activity.
The announcements form part of a plan to expand the state's AI ecosystem through higher education, research facilities, and industry participation.
Artificial intelligence will also be introduced in the school curriculum from Class VI onwards. The government said that this is for providing students with basic exposure to AI at an early stage.
To support AI-related infrastructure, Karnataka will establish two green data centres. One facility will be located in a coastal district and the other near Bengaluru. These centres are expected to support cloud computing, data storage, and AI applications.
The state government said it intends to increase the use of AI in public services over time. Areas identified include education, healthcare, agriculture, government service delivery and support for small businesses.
Speaking at the event, Shivakumar said Karnataka's objective is to expand the practical use of AI across different sectors while building the required digital infrastructure and skilled workforce.
Karnataka contributes nearly 40% of India's software exports and is home to more than 17,000 startups, along with thousands of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), according to the Chief Minister.
During the event, he also invited Google to expand its engagement with the state in areas such as AI research, education, startup development and technology applications.
