Karnataka plans to establish India’s first Quantum City at Hesaraghatta, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Thursday, as per an Economic Times news report.

The proposed site is to include research laboratories, startups, and industry working on quantum technology. The project is part of Karnataka’s plans for deep-tech research and advanced manufacturing.

Shivakumar said government, universities, researchers, investors and companies would need to work together as the sector develops.

US Collaboration

Speaking at the inauguration of the QUANTUM exhibition at Science Gallery Bengaluru, in the presence of US Ambassador Sergio Gor, Shivakumar sought greater cooperation with American institutions in research, innovation and skills.

He said Bengaluru has more than 1,000 US companies and around 80,000 American citizens. The city also has more than 10,000 startups and a technology workforce of over one million people.

Karnataka is seeking partnerships with US universities for joint research, curriculum development and industry-linked learning. The state is also working on Educational, Skill and Innovation Corridors connecting Karnataka with technology centres in Silicon Valley, Boston, Austin and Pittsburgh.

The proposed partnerships would also involve incubators, accelerators, research parks and other innovation institutions. The state wants these links to connect students and researchers with laboratories, startups, and companies in both markets.

Existing Quantum Initiatives

Karnataka already has the Karnataka Quantum Mission, which includes startups and technology companies working in the field. A Centre of Excellence in Quantum Artificial Intelligence and Computing has also been established at IIIT Dharwad under the Local Economy Accelerator Program (LEAP).

The Dharwad centre is the first such facility outside Bengaluru, according to the Chief Minister. He said quantum technology is expected to affect areas including computing, communications, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing.
