The Karnataka Government has approved the establishment of 50 Artificial Intelligence (AI) laboratories in government colleges as part of the 2026-27 State Budget, as per news reports.

The project will be taken up with support from the Government of India's AI Mission and is aimed at increasing access to technology education in public institutions across the state.

Funding Planned for the Initiative

Under the AI Mission, each laboratory will receive financial assistance of ₹68.98 lakh over 3 years, with the funds to be released in 3 instalments. The Karnataka government has separately sanctioned ₹10 crore for the programme.

Out of this amount, ₹6.29 crore will be released during the 1st year for the initial phase of implementation.

Training in AI and Related Fields

The proposed laboratories will provide practical training in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, and other related technologies.

Selected colleges will be equipped with AI-enabled laboratory facilities to support classroom learning, practical exercises, and student projects linked to these subjects.

The state government said the initiative is to improve students' exposure to emerging technologies and help build skills that are increasingly required across technology-driven sectors.

Focus on Colleges Outside Major Cities

The programme will have a special focus on government colleges located in Tier-2 and Tier-3 regions.

According to Karnataka IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge, access to technology education should not remain limited to large urban centres, and students from smaller towns should also have opportunities to learn emerging technologies.

The government has also approved 23 educational institutions in the first phase for the establishment of AI Data Laboratories as part of the programme.
