
Indian Railways is preparing to run its first hydrogen-powered train as part of a pilot project aimed at promoting cleaner transportation and supporting the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. The initiative marks a major step towards adopting new, sustainable fuel technologies in the rail sector.
The pilot project follows specifications created by the Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO). The hydrogen train-set has already been manufactured, marking a milestone in India’s move towards greener mobility.
To support the train, a hydrogen production plant has been proposed in Jind. The plant will generate hydrogen through electrolysis, an important method used to produce green hydrogen without carbon emissions.
The hydrogen train-set is fully designed and developed in India, reflecting the Railways’ commitment to self-reliance. It stands out as the world’s longest and most powerful hydrogen train currently built on a broad-gauge platform.
The train consists of ten coaches in total. This includes two Driving Power Cars, each generating 1200 kW of power, adding up to a total of 2400 kW. The remaining eight coaches are equipped to carry passengers.
This design highlights India’s engineering capability and readiness to adopt next-generation transport technologies.
One of the most important features of the hydrogen train is its zero carbon emissions. The only by-product released during operation is water vapour, making it a clean alternative to diesel-powered trains.
By shifting to hydrogen fuel, Indian Railways aims to lower its carbon footprint and support national climate goals. The pilot project will also help engineers and policymakers study how hydrogen traction technology performs in real conditions.
Since the hydrogen train-set and its supporting systems have been built on a pilot basis, comparing costs with traditional rail systems is not possible at this stage. However, the technology has strong potential to reduce long-term emissions and fuel dependency.
This project showcases India’s commitment to exploring cleaner, innovative solutions in rail travel. It could eventually guide the development of more hydrogen-powered trains and help modernise the country’s railway network.
