Indian Railways Freight Loading Rises 9% YoY to 141.3 Million Tonnes in July 2026

Indian Railways recorded 141.3 million tonnes of freight loading in July 2026, marking a 9% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared with 129.7 million tonnes handled in July 2025, as per a PIB report.  

The growth was supported by higher loading across key commodities and stronger freight revenue. 

Freight Loading Grows 9% YoY 

Indian Railways transported 141.3 million tonnes of freight during July 2026, up from 129.7 million tonnes in the corresponding month last year.  

According to the government, the growth reflects sustained demand from core sectors of the economy and continued efforts to improve freight logistics and operational efficiency. 

Higher Commodity Loading Supports Growth 

Among key commodities, iron ore loading increased 22.2% YoY, while fertiliser loading rose 12%. Coal and food grain loading each recorded 11.5% growth, while balance other goods increased 12.1%. Domestic coal supply to power plants also rose 20% during July compared with the year-ago period. 

Freight Revenue Rises 8% 

The increase in freight movement resulted in an incremental freight revenue of ₹1,137 crore over July 2025, representing 8% growth.  

Among railway zones, East Central Railway and Eastern Railway each recorded 33% growth in freight revenue, followed by West Central Railway (23%) and South Eastern Railway (10.33%). 

Passenger Traffic Also Improves 

Indian Railways carried 63.35 crore passengers during July 2026, compared with 62.19 crore passengers in the corresponding month last year.  

The government said passenger traffic continued to grow across both suburban and non-suburban segments.

Conclusion 

Indian Railways reported 9% YoY growth in freight loading to 141.3 million tonnes during July 2026, supported by higher movement of key commodities and an 8% increase in freight revenue. Passenger traffic also increased during the month, reflecting continued growth in rail transportation across the country.
