Indian Railways Expands Free Wi-Fi and CCTV Coverage to Enhance Passenger Safety

Indian Railways has taken significant steps to improve passenger convenience and safety by expanding free Wi-Fi services and strengthening surveillance infrastructure across its network.
As part of its ongoing modernisation efforts, free Wi-Fi is now available at 6,117 railway stations nationwide, while extensive CCTV surveillance has been deployed at stations and onboard coaches.
Free Wi-Fi Coverage Across Stations
Free Wi-Fi services have been provided at thousands of railway stations across the country to enhance digital connectivity for passengers. The Ministry of Railways clarified that no separate funds have been specifically sanctioned for these Wi-Fi services, indicating efficient use of existing resources and partnerships.
Access to the Wi-Fi network requires only a mobile number for one-time password verification, and no additional personal information is collected. The railway administration has stated that any technical issues related to Wi-Fi services are addressed promptly to ensure uninterrupted access for users.
Expansion of CCTV Surveillance
To ensure a safe and secure travel environment, Indian Railways has been steadily expanding its CCTV surveillance coverage. So far, CCTV systems have been installed at 1,731 railway stations and in 11,953 coaches.
The installation of cameras at stations and coaches is an ongoing process and is funded under capital expenditure. These surveillance systems play a crucial role in crime prevention, crowd management and post-incident investigation.
Security Enhancements at New Delhi Railway Station
New Delhi Railway Station, one of the busiest transport hubs in the country, has been equipped with extensive CCTV coverage. Cameras have been installed in both outdoor areas such as entry and exit points, foot overbridges and platforms, as well as indoor locations including waiting halls and ticket counters.
Following the development of new areas within the station premises after February 15, 2025, additional cameras were installed to ensure comprehensive coverage. At present, a total of 250 CCTV cameras are operational at the station.
