Indian Navy Takes Delivery of New ‘Amini’ Anti-Submarine Warship Built by GRSE

The Indian Navy received Amini, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW SWC), from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, on November 5, 2026, as per PIB news report.
The vessel is part of a series of warships designed and built by GRSE for operations involving the detection and engagement of underwater threats.
Design and Construction
The ASW shallow watercraft have been designed and constructed by GRSE in accordance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). Amini is among the largest Indian naval warships to use waterjet propulsion.
The vessel has been built for anti-submarine warfare operations and will also be used for coastal surveillance and mine-laying activities. Its delivery adds another vessel to the Navy's fleet for operations in shallow waters.
Weapons and Detection Systems
Amini is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and sonar systems. These systems are used to detect underwater threats and engage targets.
The combination of detection equipment and onboard weapons forms the basis of the vessel's anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The equipment is intended to support naval operations along India's coastline and in shallow-water areas.
More Than 80% Indigenous Content
The vessel has over 80% indigenous content, with its construction involving domestic shipbuilding capabilities. The project is part of the Government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to increase domestic production and reduce dependence on imported defence equipment.
The delivery also reflects the Indian Navy's ongoing procurement of indigenously designed and constructed warships. GRSE, based in Kolkata, is responsible for the construction of the ASW SWC series.
Naming and Naval History
The ship is named after Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The name was previously used by INS Amini, a Petya III Class Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette that was decommissioned in 2002.

Conclusion
With the delivery of Amini, the Indian Navy has added another vessel to its shallow-water anti-submarine warfare fleet. The ship's construction, which includes more than 80% indigenous content, is part of the country's plans to expand domestic defence manufacturing.
