India is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP) on February 18 to supply 1 lakh tons of rice. According to news reports, the shipment is meant for humanitarian operations in regions facing food shortages.
The WFP uses such consignments for emergency relief and support program across several countries. India has supplied grains for similar efforts in the past.
The rice will be part of the WFP’s regular procurement for its global operations. The agency depends on contributions from member countries to run the food assistance programs.
India’s large procurement and storage systems have allowed it to supply grains for both domestic welfare schemes and international humanitarian requirements.
The agreement comes within the cooperation between India and the United Nations. UN Resident Coordinator in India Stefan Priesner reportedly said the organisation views India as an important partner in food security and other development programs.
He said more than 20 UN-related events are scheduled over the next few days, involving senior officials and agencies.
India and the UN currently operate under a 5-year cooperation framework that guides joint work across sectors. These include health, climate action, disaster risk reduction, nutrition, and economic development.
A fresh round of analysis is expected to begin this year to prepare for the next framework period.
