India’s WPI Inflation Eases Slightly to 9.78% in July 2026 from 9.87% in June 2026

India's wholesale price inflation remained elevated in July 2026, although the overall rate eased slightly from the previous month. Provisional data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed WPI inflation at 9.78% in July 2026, compared with 9.87% in June 2026. 

The WPI stood at 110.0, against 110.2 in June 2026, based on the 2022-23 base year. 

Fuel Inflation Drops Sharply 

Fuel and Power remained the biggest contributor among the major groups by inflation rate, despite a sharp moderation. Inflation in the group fell to 20.05% in July from 27.41% in June. 

The group's index also declined to 105.4 from 111.1. 

Primary Articles and Manufacturing See Higher Inflation 

Inflation in Primary Articles increased to 8.52% from 7% in June. Its index rose to 117.2 from 116.1, with July indices of 118.2 for Food Articles, 112.6 for Non-Food Articles and 125.4 for Minerals. 

Manufactured Products inflation also moved higher to 8.29% from 7.48%, while its index increased to 108.4 from 107.8. 

Food Products, Textiles, Chemicals and Chemical Products, Basic Metals and Electrical Equipment recorded relatively higher inflation within the manufacturing group. 

Food Inflation Moves Higher 

The WPI Food Index, which carries a 24.99% weight, recorded inflation of 6.65% in July, up from 6.14% in June. 

The government identified Mineral Oils, Food Articles, Basic Metals, Non-Food Articles, Food Products and Chemicals and Chemical Products among the major drivers of wholesale price inflation. 

May Inflation Revised Upward 

The final WPI index for May 2026 was revised to 110.1 from the earlier provisional estimate of 109.9. May inflation was consequently revised to 9.88% from 9.68%. 

The July estimate was based on a 78.55% weighted response rate, while the final May figure used a 98.14% response rate. 

Next WPI Data Due September 14, 2026 

The Ministry said provisional WPI, Output Producer Price Index and trial Input Producer Price Index data for August 2026 will be released on September 14, 2026.

Conclusion 

Wholesale inflation eased marginally in July, with lower fuel inflation partly offset by higher inflation in Primary Articles, Manufactured Products and food.
