India's edible oil imports declined in July 2026, while cumulative imports for the first nine months of the 2025-26 oil year remained higher than a year earlier, according to the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA), as per The PTI news report.

Edible oil imports fell 8% to 14.81 lakh tonnes in July 2026 from 16.16 lakh tonnes a year earlier. Total vegetable oil imports, including edible and non-edible oils, dropped 7% to 15.25 lakh tonnes from 16.48 lakh tonnes.

9-Month Imports Rise 5%

From November 2025 to July 2026, India's vegetable oil imports stood at 121.50 lakh tonnes, compared with 116.03 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous oil year.

Edible oil imports during the same period increased 5% to 119.23 lakh tonnes, from 113.46 lakh tonnes a year earlier.

Crude Oil Share Rises to 96%

The composition of India's import basket changed during the nine-month period. The share of crude oil increased to 96% from 86%, while refined oils fell to 4% from 14%.

SEA attributed the change to an increase in crude palm oil imports.

Malaysia and Indonesia Supply Palm Oil

India sources palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia, while soyabean oil is imported from Argentina and Brazil.

The higher crude oil share in the import basket came alongside increased imports of crude palm oil.
