India's UPI Set to Connect with Indonesia's Payment Network

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will soon be linked with Indonesia's payment system. The announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi signals a key development aimed at boosting bilateral relations and easing transactions for businesses and travellers between the 2 countries, as per news reports. 

India’s UPI Integration with Indonesia's Payment System 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, highlighted the integration plan of India's UPI with Indonesia's payment system.  

This is set to make business operations and travel between both countries more convenient. The move is considered a step towards enhanced financial connectivity and cooperation. 

Strengthening Technological and Supply Chain Collaborations 

PM Modi emphasised the collaboration in technology and strategic industries between India and Indonesia. Discussions have led to agreements for strengthening supply chains in critical sectors such as minerals and steel, with new partnerships forming around stainless steel and rare-earth magnets. 

India and Indonesia will launch the conservation project for the Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta, further cementing cultural ties.

Cultural and Educational Initiatives 

The conservation project for the Prambanan Temple, over 1,000 years old, will be launched by Modi and Prabowo, underlining the shared cultural heritage of the two countries.  

Additionally, PM Modi announced the celebration of the 'Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy', marking the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore's visit to Indonesia and acknowledging Indonesia's first Education Minister Dewantara's inspiration from Tagore's education philosophy. 

India’s UPI Global Expansion 

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is currently accepted in 10 countries, including Singapore, the UAE, France, Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Cambodia, and Greece.  

This global expansion allows Indian travelers to scan local QR codes and make instant digital payments directly from their bank accounts.
