The Consumer Price Index (CPI) of India stood at 4.38% in June 2026, marking a rise in retail inflation under the base year 2024, as per the PIB’s press release.  

Simultaneously, the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) registered a year-on-year food inflation of 5.32% over June 2025. 

Overall Inflation and Indices 

In June 2026, India's year-on-year inflation rate, based on the All-India CPI, recorded an increase of 4.38%. This figure is provisional. The corresponding inflation rates for the rural and urban sectors are distinct, with rural inflation at 4.74% and urban inflation at 3.92%.  

The CPI index for rural areas was noted at 107.24, while urban areas recorded an index of 106.69, culminating in a combined index of 107.00. 

Food Inflation Insights 

The food inflation rate saw a hike on a year-on-year basis, registering at 5.32% in June 2026. The CFPI for rural sectors marked 5.45% inflation, while urban regions recorded 5.09%.  

With a CFPI index of 107.15 for combined areas, and 106.82 and 107.72 for rural and urban areas respectively, the food inflation context reflects a substantive escalation. 

Items with Notable Inflation Trends 

Items such as silver jewellery recorded a high inflation rate at 133.21% in June 2026. Other items like ginger, gold/diamond/platinum jewellery, tomato, and raisin (kishmish) and monacca also saw substantial inflation percentages.  

Notably, silver jewellery had the highest inflation among the top items in this category.

Regional Inflation Trends 

On a state level, regions with over 50 lakh population exhibited varying inflation rates. Telangana had the highest inflation rate of 6.36%, followed by Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. Odisha also showed relatively high inflation rates, with the combined section reporting 5.15%. 

Housing and Other Inflation Sectors 

Housing inflation for June 2026 registered at 2.10%. Notably, rural areas saw an inflation rate of 2.66%, while urban areas recorded 1.90%.  

Other sectors like transport services and equipment operation exhibited inflation rates of up to 7.70% for goods transport services. 

Conclusion 

In June 2026, India's Consumer Price Index reflected a 4.38% increase, while the Consumer Food Price Index stood at 5.32%. Rural inflation was recorded at 4.74%, urban inflation at 3.92%, and housing inflation at 2.10%. Silver jewellery saw an inflation rate of 133.21%.
