India's Retail Inflation Hits 23-Month High of 5.54% in September 2026

India’s retail inflation climbed to 5.54% in September 2026, from 4.83% in August 2026, reaching its highest level since October 2024. The latest reading brought inflation closer to the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance limit of 6%.
The rise was not limited to food prices. Transport and service costs also increased, while inflation remained above the RBI’s 4% target for the fourth consecutive month.
Food Prices Push Inflation Higher
Food inflation rose to 7.74% in September 2026, up from 5.97% in August 2026. Onion prices saw the sharpest increase, with inflation jumping to 108.09% from 48.78% a month earlier.
Garlic and lemon inflation stood at 54.62% and 36.41%, respectively. Tomato and potato prices remained lower than a year earlier, although their rates of deflation narrowed.
Transport and Service Costs Rise
Inflation in restaurants and accommodation services increased to 9.36% from 8.38% in August 2026. Transport inflation also moved higher, reaching 5.01% against 4.60% in the previous month.
Core inflation, which excludes food and fuel, edged up to 4.6% from 4.4%. Prices rose across 11 of the 12 CPI divisions, with personal care being the only exception.
Rural Inflation Crosses 6%
Rural inflation reached 6.08% in September 2026, compared with 4.88% in urban areas. Among states with populations above five million, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest inflation at 6.81%, followed by Odisha at 6.70%.
Weak monsoon conditions and low reservoir replenishment have also raised concerns about rabi sowing and the availability of fresh crop supplies.
RBI Rate Decision in Focus
The RBI recently raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its stance to calibrated tightening. It expects inflation to reach 6% in the October-December quarter and average 5.2% in FY27.

Conclusion
Food prices and the arrival of fresh crops will remain important to the inflation outlook. The RBI’s next policy decision will follow September’s higher reading and its latest inflation projections.
