Andhra Pradesh has signed an agreement with Karnataka-based Sarla Aviation to set up India’s first large electric air taxi manufacturing cluster. The project carries a total investment plan of ₹1,300 crore.
The MoU was signed at the CII Partnership Summit 2025 in Visakhapatnam through the Andhra Pradesh Airport Development Corporation Ltd (APADCL), as per the reports.
Project Site and Initial Development
The hub, called Sky Factory, will be located in Thimmasamduram village in Kalyanadurg Mandal, Anantapur district. The first phase will cover 150 acres and involve an investment of ₹330 crore.
It will include basic manufacturing blocks, testing zones, research spaces and a 2 km runway for trial operations. A second phase is expected to add another 350 acres as the project expands.
Capacity and Planned Operations
Sky Factory is designed to handle the full process of producing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The facility will include assembly lines, composite material labs and units for electrical and mechanical components.
At full capacity, it is expected to produce up to 1,000 aircraft a year, including the company’s hybrid VTOL model and other indigenously made systems such as wiring harnesses and landing-gear parts.
Jobs and Government Role
The project is expected to create 40 specialised jobs and around 140 indirect jobs by 2027. APADCL will coordinate clearances and general support to keep the project on schedule. State authorities have described the hub as part of plans to increase industrial activity in sectors linked to aviation and mobility.
Sarla Aviation’s Ongoing Work
Sarla Aviation, founded in 2023, is building a 6-seater electric flying taxi intended for short urban routes. The company plans to begin commercial operations by 2029, depending on testing results and certification timelines.
