The government of Tamil Nadu has entered into a significant agreement with Sarvam AI to establish India's first sovereign artificial intelligence park, with an investment of ₹10,000 crore. This initiative aims to create 1,000 high-skilled jobs and develop a comprehensive AI ecosystem within the state.
The Sovereign AI Park will be a pioneering district in India, integrating AI compute infrastructure, secure data frameworks, and model research labs. It will also feature AI innovation clusters and a dedicated Institute for AI in Governance.
This setup ensures that data, models, and compute resources remain within the state's trust boundary, fostering a sovereign and ethical AI ecosystem.
TRB Rajaa, Tamil Nadu's Minister of Industries, emphasised the state's commitment to shaping the future of AI from a state-led perspective. The initiative is expected to drive AI deployment across sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, and citizen engagement, positioning Tamil Nadu as a leader in AI technology.
Drawing inspiration from the historic Sangam academies, the Sovereign AI Park will serve as a modern Digital Sangam. It aims to develop Tamil-first AI models that integrate classical vocabulary with contemporary use-cases, embedding cultural context into digital intelligence.
V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the potential for Tamil Nadu's students and researchers to become global creators of AI. By anchoring AI infrastructure and research in the state, the initiative seeks to leverage Tamil Nadu's talent strength for economic leadership.
Pratyush Kumar, Co-founder of Sarvam AI, noted that the partnership aims to build AI systems trained and governed in Tamil Nadu for global application. Sarvam AI's work includes open-source models supporting multiple Indian languages and multilingual AI products.
