India's airport passenger-handling capacity has increased to over 580 million passengers per annum (MPPA) following expansion and modernisation initiatives undertaken across the country, the government informed the Lok Sabha, as per The CNBC TV 18 news reports.

The Centre said airport infrastructure development continues under its Viksit Bharat@2047 vision, with investments focused on expanding existing airports, developing greenfield airports, reviving underserved airports, and encouraging private participation.

Airport Capacity Exceeds Current Passenger Traffic

Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said Indian airports handled around 420 million passengers during FY26, significantly below the installed capacity of over 580 MPPA.

He said airport expansion projects are undertaken after evaluating passenger growth trends, airline requirements, operational needs, financial viability and techno-economic feasibility.

Government Addresses Airport Congestion

Responding to concerns over congestion at airports, the ministry said passenger traffic fluctuates during festivals, holidays and peak travel seasons, which can temporarily increase congestion at certain airports.

It added that airport operators continuously monitor traffic patterns and adopt operational measures to facilitate smoother passenger movement during such periods.

95 Airports Operational Under UDAN

The Centre informed Parliament that 95 aerodromes had been operationalised under the RCS-UDAN scheme as of July 10, 2026.

Under the modified UDAN programme, the government aims to connect 120 new destinations and serve 4 crore passengers over the next decade.
