India, Romania Set Three-Year Target To Double Bilateral Trade; Defence, Supply Chains Among Focus Areas

India and Romania have agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade over the next three years following talks between President Droupadi Murmu and Romanian President Nicusor Dan in Bucharest.  

The discussions covered trade, defence, education, science and technology, and cultural cooperation. Both sides also reviewed the progress made in bilateral ties and identified areas for further engagement. 

Economic Cooperation on the Agenda 

Trade and investment figured prominently during the meeting. The two countries agreed to encourage greater business engagement to strengthen supply chains. President Murmu said Romania remains an important partner for India in the European Union.  

She also referred to the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, stating that it could create additional opportunities for businesses and skilled professionals in both countries. 

Cooperation Beyond Trade 

Defence cooperation was among the areas discussed by the two leaders. India and Romania also agreed to expand joint research under the existing Programme of Cooperation in Science and Technology.  

As part of future collaboration, the two governments will observe 2028 as the "India-Romania Year of Innovation", marking 80 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. 

Education and Cultural Initiatives 

Three agreements relating to education, culture and people-to-people exchanges were signed during the visit. India announced that an Indian Studies Chair will be established at the University of Bucharest with support from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).  

The Government of India will also double the number of training opportunities offered to Romania under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme. 

State Visit After Nearly Three Decades 

President Murmu arrived in Bucharest on July 23 during the final leg of her State Visits to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania. This is the first State Visit by an Indian President to Romania in nearly 30 years.  

She was received by Romania's Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Țoiu before attending a ceremonial welcome at the Cotroceni Palace, where delegation-level talks were held.

Conclusion 

The discussions resulted in a series of agreements for strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors. Trade expansion and defence cooperation remained among the key outcomes.
