India and Myanmar are expanding discussions on rare earth mining as New Delhi looks to secure alternative sources of critical minerals, as per a Reuters report.

The latest developments follow visits by two Indian delegations to Myanmar in December 2024 and February 2026 to discuss rare earths and other critical minerals.

The engagements come at a time when countries are seeking to diversify supply chains for minerals that are largely processed in China.

Discussions at Mandalay Forum

At a mining forum held in Mandalay on Wednesday (22 July 2026), India's Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, said cooperation in the mining sector had increased over the past two years. He said the rare earths sector had become an area of growing engagement between the two countries.

According to Thakur, the issue was also discussed during Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing's visit to India in May and June this year.

Thakur also said that India's demand for critical minerals and Myanmar's mineral resources present opportunities for cooperation, while referring to sustainable mining as part of the discussions.

Myanmar's Position in Rare Earth Supply

Myanmar is a major producer of heavy rare earths, with mines in Kachin state accounting for nearly half of global output.

These minerals are transported to China, where they are processed into magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines and other industrial applications.

The concentration of mining in Myanmar and processing capacity in China has made the supply chain significant for countries seeking to reduce reliance on a single source for critical minerals.

Indian Companies Present

Indian companies participating in the Mandalay forum included IREL, NTPC Mining, Himadri Specialty, Oceanic Sands, PrNd Metal & Magnets and Jai Puri Holdings.

Thakur also said Midwest from India had remained engaged with Myanmar in recent years, although he did not provide additional details.
