India added 34.4 GW of solar and wind power capacity between January and September 2025. Reports indicate that this is higher than the total renewable energy capacity added in the calendar year 2024.

Solar and Wind Energy Capacity

Utility-scale solar projects contributed 22.5 GW of new capacity during the first nine months. This is a 70% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Nearly half of this capacity was commissioned in the third quarter of 2025.

Rooftop solar capacity grew by 5.8 GW, an 81% rise compared to last year. Public sector banks approved over 5.79 lakh loans worth ₹10,907 crore for rooftop solar projects during this period.

In the off-grid and distributed solar segment, 1,166 MW of capacity was added, about 13% higher than the same period in 2024.

Wind energy installations reached 4.96 GW from January to September 2025. This represents an 88.8 per cent increase compared to the first 9 months of 2024.

Renewable Energy Mix

By the end of September 2025, India’s total renewable energy capacity was 247.3 GW. Solar accounted for 52% of this capacity. Wind made up 21%, large hydro 20%, bio power 5%, and small hydro 2%.

Conclusion

India is expected to add another 11-12 GW of solar and wind capacity in the last quarter of 2025. Total renewable energy capacity for the year could reach 45-46 GW if these additions are achieved. The first nine months of 2025 show growth across utility-scale solar, rooftop solar, off-grid solar, and wind segments. Renewable energy capacity continues to expand steadily across multiple segments.
