India's edible oil imports recorded their highest level in 10 months during July 2026, as refiners stepped up purchases to replenish inventories before the upcoming festive season, as per Reuters report.

Total imports climbed 34% month-on-month to 1.49 million tonnes, supported by higher shipments of palm oil, soyoil and sunflower oil amid tightening domestic supplies.

Palm Oil and Soyoil Lead the Increase

Palm oil imports surged 50% from June 2026 to 733,000 tonnes, marking the highest monthly level in 5 months.

Soyoil imports rose 32% to 501,000 tonnes, the highest in seven months, while sunflower oil imports increased 4% to 253,000 tonnes, contributing to the overall rise in edible oil imports.

Inventory Rebuilding Ahead of Festivals

The increase in imports follows a period of lower purchases that reduced domestic inventories. Refiners have now increased buying to meet demand during India's festival season, which runs from August to November.

India sources most of its palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, while soyoil and sunflower oil are primarily imported from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine.

Global Market Impact

As the world's largest importer of vegetable oils, India's higher purchases could help reduce inventories in major producing countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Argentina, while also supporting benchmark palm oil and soyoil futures.

Conclusion

India's edible oil imports climbed to a 10-month high in July, driven by stronger purchases across all three major edible oils as refiners replenished stocks ahead of the festive season and domestic supplies remained tight.
