India-Chile CEPA Talks Continue as Trade Crosses $5.6 Billion

India and Chile are working towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with bilateral trade between the two countries crossing $5.6 billion in 2025. Chilean Ambassador to India Juan Angulo M shared the update at an event in Chennai on Monday. 

Angulo said the proposed agreement is being pursued to deepen trade, investment and economic cooperation. He also spoke about Tamil Nadu's business base and the areas where Chilean companies could find opportunities to work with businesses and institutions in the state. 

Tamil Nadu's Industries Draw Attention 

Automobiles and engineering were among the sectors mentioned by Angulo. He also pointed to IT, healthcare, renewable energy and manufacturing. 

Ports and logistics were included as well, giving the proposed India-Chile engagement a wider range of sectors to work with. 

Bilateral Trade Crosses $5.6 Billion 

Trade between India and Chile exceeded $5.6 billion in 2025. Angulo said the figure reflects the growing importance of the relationship between the two countries. 

The CEPA discussions are taking place alongside this growing trade relationship. The ambassador did not give details at the event about the agreement's timeline or its proposed provisions. 

Chennai Event Marks Chile's Independence 

Angulo was speaking at a reception held to mark the 216th anniversary of Chile's independence. The gathering included government representatives, diplomats, business and industry members, academics, cultural representatives and media. 

The reception was hosted by Sunita Shahaney, Honorary Consul of Chile in Chennai. 

Shahaney's 27 Years Recognised 

Shahaney's 27 years of service as Honorary Consul were also recognised at the event. She took up the position on April 28, 1999, and has worked with seven Chilean ambassadors. 

Her work has included supporting diplomatic and parliamentary visits, helping build business links and organising events that brought Chilean culture to Chennai. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet's state visit to Chennai in March 2009 was one of the notable events during her tenure. 

A Long Association with Southern India 

Ambassador Angulo credited Shahaney's work in maintaining Chile's links with Chennai and southern India, describing her as a bridge between the two sides.

Shahaney said she would continue working to strengthen India-Chile ties and bring people from both countries closer.

Conclusion 

The CEPA discussions come as India-Chile trade has crossed $5.6 billion. Tamil Nadu's industrial, services and infrastructure sectors are also being highlighted as possible areas for closer business engagement.
