India Holds First Joint Meeting with V4 Countries; Defence and UN Reforms Discussed

The Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia have backed India’s push for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council, according to a Bloomberg news report. The four countries are part of the Visegrad Group, commonly referred to as the V4. 

Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar confirmed the position after a meeting with India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in New York on Monday. He said the four countries supported India having a permanent place on the council. 

Meeting Comes Amid US Tensions 

The talks took place as India continues to build economic and strategic relations with countries in Europe and Asia. Its relationship with the US has faced tensions in recent months. 

A trade agreement between India and the US, which has been under negotiation for a long period, is yet to be completed. Another point of tension followed a law signed by US President Donald Trump that gives him new powers to impose tariffs on countries purchasing Russian energy. 

First Joint Meeting with V4 

Against this backdrop, India held its first joint ministerial meeting with the four V4 countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. 

Along with Blanar, the meeting was attended by Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orban, and Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka. 

Defence Ties on the Agenda 

Defence cooperation featured in the discussions, with Jaishankar calling for stronger ties in the sector. The ministers also exchanged views on regional and global developments and security matters. 

Cooperation through multilateral forums was another part of the meeting. The ministers discussed reforms to global institutions and issues affecting developing countries. 

Space and Connectivity 

The discussions were not limited to defence and international institutions. Space cooperation, connectivity, and people-to-people mobility were also included in the meeting. 

The talks covered these areas as India and the four Central European countries discussed their broader bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Conclusion 

The meeting brought India together with the four V4 countries for discussions covering defence, global institutions, space and connectivity. Their support for India’s UN Security Council bid was also recorded during the talks.
