India Caps Trade Margins on 137 Vital Anti-Cancer Drugs at 30%; Retail Prices to Drop Up to 70% from November 9, 2026

The Indian government has announced a sweeping regulatory intervention to make lifesaving oncology treatments significantly more affordable.
By integrating 137 non-scheduled anti-cancer medications into the Trade Margin Rationalisation framework, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers aims to curb excessive retail markups.
Effective from 9 November 2026, this policy shift will slash maximum retail prices by up to 70%, providing immense financial relief to millions of patients and families battling cancer across the country.
Market Rationalisation and Price Adjustments
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority has formally capped the trade margin on these specialized formulations at a maximum of 30% of the retail price.
This regulatory measure addresses inflated distribution pipelines without hurting legitimate manufacturer revenues or causing artificial shortages in the market.
The policy applies to advanced medical treatments including immunotherapies, as well as critical therapies for breast, prostate, colon, ovarian, and cervical cancers.
High-demand drugs such as Pembrolizumab, Durvalumab, and Osimertinib are expected to see immediate reductions, building upon the initial price controls implemented in 2019 that lowered costs for 42 other oncology formulations.
Revised Pricing Structure
The updated retail costs are calculated through a standardised official formula tied to historical distributor costs. The maximum retail price is determined by taking the Price to Stockist or Price to Distributor from March 2026, applying the capped 30% trade margin, and adding the relevant Goods and Services Tax.
Under this new layout, a drug that previously carried a retail price of ₹300 plus taxes based on a stockist cost of ₹70 will now have its maximum permitted price reduced to exactly ₹100 plus taxes.
Implementation Directives for the Supply Chain
The ministry has issued strict compliance mandates to ensure that the benefits reach consumers directly.
Pharmaceutical companies are required to submit their updated pricing profiles to the government within seven days of the official notification and must maintain their current production levels to secure an uninterrupted supply.
Retail pharmacies and hospitals must implement the lower prices on their premises and update their digital platforms by 9 November 2026.
Consumers can independently monitor these changes and verify the correct retail rates using the official Pharma Sahi Daam mobile application or the pricing authority's online portal.
