India and Slovakia have agreed to deepen their bilateral engagement by upgrading their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's State Visit to Slovakia.

Historic Visit Leads to Partnership Upgrade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Slovakia on 15 June 2026 at the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The visit was notable as it was the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Slovakia became independent in 1993.

Building on decades of cooperation, both leaders agreed to elevate bilateral ties and strengthen existing mechanisms while exploring new avenues for engagement.

Defence, Security and Counter-Terrorism Receive Greater Focus

The countries agreed to expand defence cooperation through regular consultations, research and development, capacity building and industrial collaboration. They also welcomed the signing of a Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation.

On security matters, both sides undeniably condemned terrorism in all its forms and strongly denounced the 22 April 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

They agreed to establish a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and reiterated support for coordinated international action against terrorism and its sponsors.

Trade, Technology and Energy Collaboration to Expand

The leaders committed to strengthening the India-Slovakia Joint Economic Committee and exploring greater trade and investment opportunities in sectors such as automotive, electronics and advanced manufacturing. They also welcomed progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and supported its early implementation.

In the technology domain, both countries welcomed a Memorandum of Understanding on Digital Technologies and agreed to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, start-ups, innovation ecosystems, 5G applications, 6G standardisation, the Internet of Things and machine-to-machine technologies.

Energy cooperation will also be expanded through joint efforts in green technologies, nuclear energy, geothermal power, research initiatives and capacity building to promote energy security and sustainability.
