The Independence Day sales brought a stronger response from consumers this year. Retailers, brands and e-commerce companies reported higher sales across several categories, giving the market a better start to the festive shopping period, as per The Economic Times news reports.

Retailers See Higher Sales

Sales rose around 25% in value compared with last year, while volumes increased by 5-7%. Reliance Retail recorded over 20% growth across groceries, electronics, apparel and JioMart.

Lifestyle reported double-digit growth, while Vijay Sales saw sales rise over 20%, with volumes up 5%.

Lifestyle International CEO Devarajan Iyer said consumer sentiment was good and that the increase was coming from higher volumes rather than only higher billing values.

Electronics Buyers Return

The electronics category also saw a strong response despite prices having increased by as much as 40% over the past 10 months.

Haier India reported around 45-50% growth in value and 30-35% growth in volume, helped by demand for front-load washing machines, side-by-side refrigerators and televisions of 55 inches and above.

Smartphone volumes also grew 5-7% after falling nearly 10% between January and July.

Online Sales Beat Expectations

Amazon India said demand was more than twice the normal level across smartphones, electronics, fashion and beauty. The company also saw stronger demand for premium products.

Flipkart reported sales above its estimates across mobiles, large appliances, electronics, furniture, home, lifestyle and groceries.

Super Plastronics sold out its Kodak, Thomson and Blaupunkt television inventory on both platforms. CEO Avneet Singh Marwah said the company grew 14% year-on-year and could have reached 20% if it had more stock.

Festive Shopping Gets an Early Boost

Haier India CEO Satish NS described the Independence Day sales as "excellent" and said the indications were positive for the festive season.

Smartphone retail chains recorded 5-15% growth in unit sales and 35-45% growth in value, according to retailer bodies.

Independence Day sales have become one of the bigger shopping periods outside the main festive season. Amazon and Flipkart began their sales in the second week of August, while offline retailers increased promotions later in the week.
