Gujarat has expanded its renewable energy infrastructure by initiating battery energy storage systems (BESS) across multiple locations in the state. The projects are aimed at improving grid stability, managing renewable power supply and supporting growing energy demand.

According to state officials, Gujarat has operational and planned battery storage projects across several districts as part of its broader renewable energy and energy storage strategy, as per The Economic Times report.

The state government has also incorporated advanced battery storage systems into its renewable energy policy framework to support future clean energy integration.

Gujarat Initiates 870 MW Battery Storage Capacity

According to an official release, Gujarat has initiated battery energy storage systems at five locations with a combined capacity of 870 MW.

Battery Energy Storage Systems are used to store electricity generated through renewable sources such as solar and wind energy. These systems help balance electricity supply, improve grid reliability and manage fluctuations in renewable power generation.

The projects form part of Gujarat’s ongoing efforts to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure and energy management capabilities.

Additional Battery Storage Projects Registered

The state has also registered 13 additional battery storage projects across multiple districts including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch.

These projects are expected to support the integration of renewable energy into the grid while improving power distribution efficiency across industrial and urban regions.

Officials stated that the projects are being developed through a competitive bidding process involving private sector participation.

Modhera Solar Village Hosts Integrated BESS Project

Modhera, recognised as India’s first solar-powered village, has operationalised the country’s first battery energy storage system integrated with a solar power plant.

The project combines renewable energy generation with battery storage capabilities, allowing electricity generated during peak solar hours to be stored and utilised when required.

The state government views such integrated systems as important for improving renewable energy utilisation and reducing power supply variability.

Operational Systems Across Ahmedabad, Mehsana and Kutch

A battery storage system has recently been commissioned at Charal in Sanand taluka of Ahmedabad district.

In addition, four battery storage systems are currently operational in Modhera in Mehsana district and Lakhpat in Kutch district.

These installations are intended to support local power management and strengthen renewable energy transmission infrastructure in the state.

Battery Storage Included in Gujarat Renewable Energy Policy 2025

The Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy, 2025 includes advanced energy storage systems as an important component of the state’s renewable energy roadmap.

Under the policy framework, the government is approving:

  • Standalone battery storage projects
  • Storage projects linked with new renewable energy installations
  • Battery systems integrated with existing renewable infrastructure

Officials stated that once the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) receives approval, commercial and industrial users will be able to register battery storage systems alongside their solar and wind energy projects.

Role of GETCO and Distribution Companies

The Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) and state power distribution companies are playing a role in identifying suitable locations and integrating storage systems into the transmission network.

Battery storage systems are increasingly being viewed as a key technology for supporting renewable energy expansion, especially as states continue to increase solar and wind generation capacity.

Conclusion

Gujarat’s expansion of battery energy storage systems reflects the growing importance of energy storage infrastructure in renewable energy management. With operational projects, additional planned installations and policy support in place, the state is continuing efforts to improve grid stability and support long-term renewable energy integration.
