
The Government has shared the latest status of three schemes for the medical devices sector in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, as per a PIB report.
These are the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Medical Devices, the Medical Device Parks Scheme and the Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry (SMDI).
The update includes details on investments, project approvals, infrastructure, and foreign direct investment in the sector.
The PLI Scheme for Medical Devices has a financial outlay of ₹3,420 crore. It covers four categories of products, including cancer care and radiotherapy devices, radiology and imaging equipment, anaesthetics, cardio-respiratory and renal care devices, and implants. A total of 27 applications have been approved, including 14 from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Actual investment reported under the scheme stands at ₹1,153.07 crore. Manufacturing has commenced for MRI and CT equipment, linear accelerators (LINACs), mammography systems, C-arms, ultrasound equipment, heart valves and stents. Incentives amounting to ₹266.64 crore had been released under the scheme up to FY2024-25.
Under the Medical Device Parks Scheme, parks are being developed in Noida, Ujjain and Kancheepuram. The facilities include testing laboratories, sterilisation units, warehousing, incubation centres and prototyping facilities for manufacturers.
According to the government, 210 manufacturing units have been allotted plots across the three parks. Central assistance released under the scheme stands at ₹209.80 crore, while utilisation has reached ₹177.98 crore.
The SMDI has a financial outlay of ₹500 crore for the FY2024-25 to FY2027-28 period. Under the Marginal Investment Scheme for Reducing Import Dependence (MIS-RID), 24 projects have been approved with grants of ₹101.50 crore.
Another 13 projects under the Common Facilities for Medical Device Clusters component have received approval or in-principle approval, with grants amounting to ₹88.67 crore.
Seven approved projects related to high-precision medical instruments are being undertaken by MSMEs, including four start-ups.
Government data showed foreign direct investment in India's MediTech sector totalled ₹17,201 crore between FY2021-22 and FY2025-26.
The Department of Pharmaceuticals has also conducted application rounds, workshops and stakeholder meetings under these schemes.
