The Union Cabinet is considering a new framework with a proposed outlay of ₹20,000 crore to support the development and deployment of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technologies for the next 5 years, as per the news report.

The initiative is aimed at fostering low-carbon industrial growth while helping India advance its long-term climate objectives.

Government Weighs Major Push for CCUS Technologies

According to Aadhar Raj, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Power, the proposed framework is currently under the Cabinet approval process.

The plan seeks to create an enabling ecosystem for carbon capture technologies through policy support, institutional mechanisms, and targeted investments.

Focus on Balancing Growth and Climate Goals

CCUS technologies are increasingly being viewed as an important tool for reducing industrial carbon emissions while maintaining economic growth.

The proposed framework aligns with India's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 while meeting rising energy demand and supporting industrial expansion.

₹20,000 Crore Allocation Proposed Over Five Years

The Union Budget 2026-27 planned a budget of ₹20,000 crore over a five-year period for promoting carbon capture, utilisation and storage technologies.

The funding is expected to support the development of commercially viable carbon management solutions across sectors with high emissions intensity.

Industry and Policymakers Discuss Deployment Strategy

The proposal was highlighted during a seminar on CCUS that brought together government officials, industry leaders, technology providers, investors, and researchers.

Discussions focused on the policy, financial, and technological measures required to accelerate large-scale adoption of carbon capture solutions in India.
