EPFO May Take Up Minimum Pension Hike Proposal on November 19, 2026

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) may discuss a proposal to increase the minimum monthly pension under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) at its 240th Central Board of Trustees (CBT) meeting on November 19, 2026, in Gir, Gujarat.
As per a Business Standard report, the Ministry of Labour and Employment informed board members about the meeting date and venue in a letter sent last week. The agenda has not yet been finalised.
Pensioners Seek Minimum Pension of ₹7,500
The minimum monthly pension under the EPS has remained at ₹1,000 since September 2014. Trade unions and pensioners’ associations have repeatedly asked the government to revise the amount, citing rising living costs.
Some groups have demanded a minimum pension of ₹7,500 per month, along with dearness allowance (DA). The government has cited the financial position of the pension fund as a key consideration in deciding whether to increase the payout.
The Centre provides budgetary support to maintain the minimum pension at ₹1,000 per month, apart from its contribution to the EPS. The financial implications of a higher pension remain a consideration in examining the demands.
Wage Ceiling for EPFO Coverage Raised
The meeting follows the government’s decision to raise the wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The revised ceiling took effect on September 17.
In February, Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the government would soon decide on changes to the wage ceilings under the EPFO and the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). He also referred to a possible increase in the minimum EPS pension.
CBT Meeting to Be Held Outside Delhi
The November meeting will take place outside New Delhi, where the CBT held its five previous meetings, generally at the EPFO headquarters in East Kidwai Nagar. The board last met outside the capital in Guwahati in March 2022.
The meeting’s final agenda is awaited. The Labour Ministry and EPFO had not responded to requests for comment by the time of publication.
