The Government of India has introduced a fully digital Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Card system from July 8, 2026. Under the new arrangement, all fresh OCI applicants will receive only a digital card instead of the traditional physical booklet.
The Bureau of Immigration (BOI) announced that existing OCI cardholders can also use a digital version of their card. The move is part of a broader effort to modernise OCI services and reduce physical documentation requirements.
The new system marks the end of physical OCI booklet issuance for all new applicants. Individuals applying for OCI registration from July 8, 2026, will receive only a digital e-OCI Card that can be accessed electronically.
Existing physical OCI booklets will remain valid and can continue to be used by current cardholders. However, carrying the physical booklet will no longer be mandatory for immigration and travel-related purposes where the digital version is accepted.
The BOI has stated that current OCI cardholders can download their digital e-OCI Card on their mobile phones. The digital card can be presented along with a valid passport at Immigration Check Posts and to participating airlines whenever required.
This change is intended to improve convenience for travellers by reducing dependence on physical documents. The facility allows OCI holders to carry their credentials electronically while retaining the validity of their existing physical records.
The government has integrated OCI-related services into the official OCI Services portal. New applications, status tracking and several other services can now be completed through the digital platform.
Applicants will generally not be required to visit an Indian Mission, Post or Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) during the application process. This transition is expected to streamline service delivery and reduce paperwork associated with OCI registration and management.
Under the revised guidelines, personal interviews will be mandatory only for applicants seeking OCI registration through marriage under Section 7A(1)(d) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The interview will be conducted by the concerned Indian Mission, Post or FRRO during document verification, and the application will be acknowledged online only after completion of this step.
For all other categories of OCI applicants, no personal interview will be required. The government has also removed the requirement for existing OCI cardholders to renew their cards after obtaining a new passport at the age of 20 or 50 or after changes to personal details such as name, nationality or gender, allowing such updates to be completed online.

The launch of the digital e-OCI Card represents a major shift in the administration of OCI services in India. From July 8, 2026, all new OCI applicants will receive only a digital card, while existing cardholders can continue using their physical booklets if they choose.
The reforms also introduce a largely paperless application process and simplify compliance requirements for OCI holders. Together, these changes are aimed at improving accessibility, reducing documentation burdens and expanding the use of digital services for overseas Indians.
