Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to travel to Japan from August 24 to 27, 2026, as per news reports. During the visit, he will hold talks with government officials and businesses on trade and investment.

Indian Business Delegation to Travel to Japan

Around 200 Indian industry representatives are to travel with Goyal. The delegation will form part of discussions with Japanese businesses on investment and partnerships in India.

Goyal announced the visit on August 18, 2026, at a dinner in New Delhi hosted by the Uttar Pradesh government for a Japanese delegation. He also invited Japanese companies to increase their investments in India.

Investment Target

Japan plans to invest 10 trillion yen, approximately ₹60,000 crore, in India over the next decade. According to Goyal, AI, semiconductors, critical minerals, batteries, energy, and next-generation mobility are among the sectors that could see investments.

Trade and FDI

In FY 2025-26, India-Japan bilateral trade stood at around $27.5 billion. Goyal said this was still below the potential of trade between the two countries.

Japan is India's fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment. Manufacturing, agriculture, technology, infrastructure, energy, defence, and the green and blue economy are among the areas identified for cooperation.

Japanese Companies Presence in India

More than 1,400 Japanese companies are operating in India. The companies include names like Suzuki, Toyota and Honda in mobility, Sony in electronics, and Hitachi and Mitsubishi in engineering.

Japanese participation is also present in infrastructure projects. These include the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project and metro systems in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. India has 11 Japanese industrial townships across eight states.

Earlier Engagement

The visit follows the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held in New Delhi in July 2026. Goyal said the Japan meetings would take forward discussions on economic cooperation.

He also met Sundeep Sikka, MD and CEO of Nippon Life India Asset Management, to discuss retail investment, the asset management sector and attracting more global capital to Indian markets.
