Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has invited bids to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extending the proposed Metro line from Kilambakkam to Chengalpattu, as per The Hindu Businessline report.

The proposed extension, covering around 25 km, is planned as part of Corridor-1 (Phase I). The tender is the first official step towards examining the feasibility of taking the Metro network further south.

Airport-Kilambakkam Project Forms the Base

The proposed extension follows the Chennai Airport–Kilambakkam Metro corridor, for which CMRL submitted a DPR to the Tamil Nadu government in February 2025.

The project covers a 15.46-km elevated corridor with 13 stations and has an estimated cost of ₹9,335 crore, including the construction of an elevated road.

The corridor is planned to connect Chennai Airport with the Kilambakkam bus terminus through Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur and Vandalur. It is to link major public transport facilities, including the airport, Tambaram railway station and the new intercity bus terminal at Kilambakkam.

Corridor Design Included Future Expansion

As per the DPR, the Metro line has been planned at Level-2, while the elevated road will be constructed at Level-1. Intermediate ramps near Tambaram have been proposed to provide access to the Outer Ring Road.

The project design also includes provision for extending the corridor beyond Kilambakkam to Chengalpattu at a later stage. The proposed extension is expected to provide an additional public transport option along the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road corridor, which also runs parallel to the suburban railway line.

North Chennai Extension Also Under Study

CMRL has separately floated another tender for preparing a DPR to extend Corridor-5 (Phase II) from Assisi Nagar in Mahadvaram to Wimco Nagar.

The proposed 11-km stretch is planned to connect with the existing Wimco Nagar Metro station and expand the Metro network in North Chennai.
