Assam Government Opens Applications for Student Financial Assistance Schemes

The Assam government has released financial assistance for schools and students affected by the recent floods in the eastern part of the state, as per a PTI news report.  

A total of ₹15.86 crore has been transferred to 793 schools across Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts to support repair and restoration work. 

In addition, ₹4.26 crore has been sanctioned from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) for 21,025 students in Sivasagar and Charaideo. The amount is meant to help students replace books, uniforms, and other educational materials lost during the floods. 

Applications Open for Student Support Schemes 

At the same event, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the application process for the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Scheme and Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Babu Scheme.  

The two schemes provide financial assistance to students studying in higher secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses. The state government said only students maintaining regular attendance and meeting academic requirements will be eligible for assistance.  

From this year, girl students enrolled in polytechnic courses and those in the seventh semester of integrated postgraduate programmes have also been included under the Nijut Moina Scheme. 

Beneficiary Base to Increase 

The Nijut Moina Scheme was introduced with the aim of supporting 10 lakh girl students across Assam. Around 1.6 lakh girls received assistance during 2024-25, while the number increased to four lakh in 2025-26 after the scheme was expanded. The government plans to add another one lakh beneficiaries during the current financial year. 

The Nijut Babu Scheme covered 50,000 boys in the previous year. An additional 70,000 students are expected to be brought under the scheme this year, taking the total number of beneficiaries to around 1.2 lakh. 

Further Support Under Review 

The chief minister said the Nijut Moina Scheme was introduced to encourage girls to continue their education and reduce child marriage.  

He added that schools which have suffered permanent damage during the floods will be assessed separately and may receive additional financial assistance. 

He also urged students to pursue additional skills alongside their academic courses and noted the need to improve enrolment in science education across the state.

Applications under the two student assistance schemes are now open across Assam. The state has also announced financial aid for flood-hit schools and students in the affected districts.
