Andhra Pradesh has moved ahead with its electric mobility roadmap by activating a new policy framework aimed at transforming urban transport through cleaner and technology-driven systems.
As per news reports, the state has operationalised the Andhra Pradesh Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy 4.0 for the 2024–29 period, with 5 cities identified as model hubs for implementation.
These include Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Nellore and Tirupati, each representing different regions and use cases for electric mobility adoption.
PG Narayana, State Municipal Minister, said the initiative is aligned with improving “Ease of Living and Ease of Doing Business” through future-ready infrastructure. He added that the programme is expected to enhance transport efficiency while reducing pollution levels.
S Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, described the move as a shift towards integrated urban planning that combines clean energy, advanced infrastructure and sustainable mobility systems, in line with long-term carbon neutrality goals.
The policy outlines a comprehensive infrastructure plan, including EV charging networks, battery swapping stations, green transport corridors and zero-emission zones.
Charging infrastructure will be deployed with one station for every 3×3 km grid within cities and one station every 30 km along inter-city routes and highways.
To support implementation, the government has proposed a ₹250 crore corpus fund, with ₹50 crore allocated to each of the 5 cities.
The rollout will follow a phased approach covering electric public transport systems, green freight corridors, renewable energy integration and smart mobility solutions.
Each selected city will adopt a tailored approach. Visakhapatnam will focus on green tourism mobility, Vijayawada on logistics-based EV infrastructure, Rajahmundry on electrified river transport, Nellore on fisheries logistics and Tirupati on pilgrim transport systems.
The initiative is also expected to attract investments across EV manufacturing, charging infrastructure and battery technologies, while generating employment opportunities.
Officials have been directed to incorporate EV charging requirements into building norms as part of regulatory updates.
With a structured policy framework, targeted investments and city-specific strategies, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself to accelerate the transition towards sustainable urban mobility and create a model for future electric transport systems.
