In a bold step toward sustainable development and industrial innovation, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has introduced a trailblazing infrastructure solution at Hazira Port. The company has completed the construction of a 1.1-kilometre road made entirely from processed steel slag: a by-product of steel production, making it the first such road to be built within a port premises anywhere in the world.
This newly developed road connects the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard, playing a key role in port logistics while simultaneously promoting an environmentally responsible construction approach. The use of steel slag aggregates underscores a new method of repurposing industrial waste for high-performance infrastructure, turning what would typically be discarded into a durable and lasting road surface.
The project was implemented under Phase II of the Bulk & General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion. It showcases a viable alternative to conventional materials and demonstrates India’s growing focus on eco-friendly infrastructure in key industrial sectors.
The initiative is the result of a joint effort between APSEZ, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), and the Union Ministry of Science & Technology. The flexible pavement structure, specifically designed by CSIR-CRRI, is built to handle heavy loads typical in port operations.
Adani officials highlighted that the road's flexible pavement design, specifically curated by CSIR-CRRI, not only enhances its load-bearing capacity and longevity but also contributes to reduced construction costs and a diminished environmental footprint. This initiative is a direct alignment with the "Waste to Wealth" mission and underscores APSEZ's unwavering commitment to environmentally responsible port development.

As of 07 July 2025, at 12:18 PM, Adani Ports and SEZ share price is trading at ₹1,421.40 per share, a decline of 0.21%.
Although this is India's third road built with steel slag, its status as the first ever constructed within a port facility marks a global achievement. The Hazira Port project reaffirms India’s leadership in innovative green infrastructure and strengthens APSEZ’s position at the forefront of sustainable maritime development.
