IRFC is a public-sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railway (MOR), primarily engaged in financing acquisition of rolling stock assets, leasing railway infrastructure, and lending to entities under MOR. The unit is responsible for raising funds to finance various MOR projects. The role of IRFC is critical to the growth of Indian Railways. In 2019 fiscal, IRFC financed Rs. 525.35 billion to Indian Railways, accounting for 39.34 percent of its total expenditure of Rs. 1,334 billion.
