Over 1.7 Crore Income Tax Returns Filed So Far for AY2026-27: IT Department

The Income Tax Department has announced that more than 1.7 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have already been filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27.
The department urged taxpayers to file their returns on time as the deadline for submitting ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2 is July 31.
Over 1.7 Crore Returns Filed
According to the Income Tax Department, over 1.7 crore taxpayers have completed the return filing process for AY2026-27.
The department also said that more than 10 lakh returns were filed on Friday, reflecting strong filing activity as the due date approaches.
July 31 Deadline Approaching
The current due date for filing ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2 for eligible taxpayers is July 31.
Taxpayers covered under these categories are expected to complete the filing process before the deadline to remain compliant with income tax regulations.
Who Can File ITR-1 (Sahaj)?
ITR-1 (Sahaj) is meant for resident individuals with an annual income of up to ₹50 lakh.
The form can be used by taxpayers earning income from salary, one house property, and agricultural income up to ₹5,000 during the financial year.
Who Should File ITR-2?
ITR-2 is applicable to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) that do not earn income from business or profession.
It is generally used by taxpayers who have capital gains income not covered under ITR-1.
