Many taxpayers are uncertain about the income tax return (ITR) filing deadline for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, with both July 31 and August 31 being mentioned this year. The confusion stems from changes announced in Budget 2026, which introduced separate due dates for different categories of taxpayers instead of a common filing deadline. As a result, knowing which due date applies to your ITR form has become more important than ever.

July 31 or August 31? Here's the Difference

For most salaried individuals and pensioners, the ITR filing deadline remains July 31, 2026. Taxpayers filing ITR-1 or ITR-2 must submit their returns by this date.

This category generally includes salaried employees, pensioners, and many individuals earning capital gains who are eligible to file ITR-2. If you fall under these categories, assuming that you have until August 31 could result in a delayed return.

Under Budget 2026, the government extended the due date only for eligible taxpayers filing ITR-3 or ITR-4. These forms are meant for individuals with business or professional income whose accounts are not subject to tax audit. Their deadline has been extended from July 31 to August 31, 2026.

Missing the Correct Deadline Can Be Costly

The extended deadline does not apply universally. Taxpayers filing ITR-1 or ITR-2 who miss the July 31 due date may have to file a belated return, which could attract interest on outstanding tax liability, applicable penalties, and delays in processing refunds.

Before filing your return, it is important to verify the correct ITR form based on your sources of income and determine the applicable due date.

Government Data Shows Rise in Super-Rich Taxpayers

Separately, the government has released fresh income tax data highlighting the increase in ultra-high-income individuals.

Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on July 27, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that 576 individuals reported a gross total income of ₹100 crore or more in their income tax returns for Assessment Year 2025-26. This marks a sharp increase from 142 individuals who reported similar income levels in AY 2021-22, reflecting a four-fold rise over four years.

Conclusion

While the extension to August 31 offers additional time for certain business and professional taxpayers, it does not change the deadline for everyone. If you are a salaried taxpayer or are filing ITR-1 or ITR-2, July 31, 2026 remains your last date to file. Checking your applicable ITR form and filing within the prescribed deadline can help you avoid unnecessary interest, penalties, and refund delays.
