July 31, 2026, is the last date for eligible taxpayers to file their Income Tax Return (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27. While filing the return before the deadline is important, taxpayers should remember that simply uploading the ITR form is not enough. The return must also be e-verified to be treated as valid under the Income Tax rules.
The good news is that taxpayers who file their ITR on or before July 31 do not have to complete e-verification on the same day. The Income Tax rules allow a separate timeline for verification, subject to certain conditions.
Yes. If a taxpayer files an ITR on or before July 31, 2026, the return will be considered filed on that date, provided it is e-verified within 30 days of submission.
This means taxpayers filing their return on the last day can complete the verification process in August without affecting the original filing date, as long as they meet the 30-day deadline.
However, if the return is verified after 30 days, the verification date may be treated as the filing date, which could result in the return being classified as a belated return.

The tax treatment depends on when the return is verified:
Scenario | Tax Treatment |
ITR filed on July 31 and verified within 30 days | Original filing date of July 31 remains valid. |
ITR filed on July 31 but verified after 30 days | Verification date may become the filing date, and the return may be treated as belated. |
ITR not verified by December 31, 2026 | The return may be treated as invalid unless the Income Tax Department condones the delay. |
Although taxpayers have up to 30 days to verify their returns, completing the process promptly helps avoid delays in processing.
Most taxpayers can e-verify their ITR using:
Aadhaar OTP
Net banking
Electronic Verification Code (EVC)
Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
Those who do not use these options must submit the signed ITR-V following the prescribed procedure.
Taxpayers who file their Income Tax Return by July 31, 2026, can complete e-verification within 30 days without losing the original filing date. However, delaying verification beyond this period may result in the return being treated as belated, while failure to verify by December 31, 2026, could make the return invalid unless the delay is condoned.
