The Income Tax Department has released the Excel Utility for ITR-7 for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 on its e-Filing portal. The utility provides eligible entities with an offline option to prepare and validate their income tax returns before submission.

The department announced the rollout through a post on X and asked taxpayers to take note of the update. The utility relates to AY 2026-27, which covers income earned during Financial Year (FY) 2025-26.

ITR-7 Excel Utility Available for AY 2026-27

The newly released Excel Utility allows eligible taxpayers to prepare their returns offline using a structured format. Users can enter the required information, perform validation checks, and generate a JSON file for submission through the e-Filing portal.

The release forms part of the Income Tax Department's phased rollout of offline utilities for different return forms. The utility is intended to simplify the return preparation process for institutions and entities covered under ITR-7.

Who Can File ITR-7 for Assessment Year 2026-27?

ITR-7 is designed for specific categories of entities rather than individual salaried taxpayers. It applies to organisations required to file returns under Sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C), and 139(4D) of the Income-tax Act.

These include charitable and religious trusts, political parties, scientific research institutions, universities, colleges, and certain educational institutions. The form is meant for entities that are mandated to furnish returns under these specified provisions.

How to Use the ITR-7 Excel Utility?

The utility must first be downloaded from the Income Tax e-Filing portal. After downloading, users can enter financial and tax-related information offline and run validation checks to verify the accuracy of the data.

Once the details are validated, the utility generates a JSON file that can be uploaded to the portal to complete the filing process. This offline approach allows institutions to prepare returns separately before final online submission.

ITR-7 Eligibility Changes and Exempt Income Entities

The Income Tax Department has clarified that from AY 2022-23 onwards, entities whose income is fully exempt under Section 10 and that are not required to file under Section 139 are not covered under ITR-7. This clarification narrows the scope of eligible filers and ensures that only entities with a statutory filing obligation use the form.

Organisations should therefore review their filing requirements before selecting the applicable return form. The clarification remains relevant for entities preparing returns for AY 2026-27.

Conclusion

The release of the ITR-7 Excel Utility for AY 2026-27 provides eligible entities with an additional offline option to prepare and validate their income tax returns. The utility supports the filing process by enabling users to generate a JSON file that can be uploaded to the e-Filing portal.

It is specifically intended for trusts, political parties, research institutions, educational bodies, and other entities covered under the relevant provisions of the Income-tax Act. Filing deadlines remain unchanged, with due dates varying based on the category of taxpayer and applicable compliance requirements.
