The Income Tax Department offers an e-Pay Tax facility that enables taxpayers to pay direct taxes online through the e-Filing portal. The service can be used to pay advance tax, self-assessment tax, demand payments, and other direct taxes electronically.

The facility is particularly useful for taxpayers who identify an additional tax liability while filing their Income Tax Return (ITR), even after considering Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and other available tax credits.

What Is the e-Pay Tax Facility?

The e-Pay Tax facility is an online payment service available on the Income Tax e-Filing portal that allows taxpayers to make direct tax payments electronically.

Taxpayers can use the service without logging in by verifying their PAN or TAN through a one-time password (OTP) sent to their registered mobile number.

Those who log in to the portal can also access their payment history and download challan receipts after completing the transaction.

The payment process remains the same whether the tax is paid under the Income-tax Act, 1961 or the Income-tax Act, 2025.

How to Make a Tax Payment

To pay tax online:

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal.

  1. Open the e-Pay Tax section.

  1. Select the applicable tax category.

  1. Choose the relevant Assessment Year or Tax Year.

  1. Enter the required tax details and the amount payable under the appropriate heads.

  1. Select your preferred payment mode and complete the transaction.

5 Ways to Pay Income Tax Through the e-Pay Tax Portal

The e-Pay Tax facility offers the following payment options:

1. Net Banking

Taxpayers can pay taxes through internet banking offered by authorised banks. After confirming the challan details, users are redirected to their bank's portal to complete the transaction. A challan receipt is generated once the payment is successful.

2. Debit Card

Eligible taxpayers can pay using debit cards issued by participating banks. After entering the card details and OTP, the payment is processed and the challan receipt becomes available on the portal.

3. Pay at Bank Counter

Those who prefer offline payment can generate a challan online and visit an authorised bank branch to pay through cash, cheque or demand draft.

Cash payments exceeding ₹10,000 are not permitted under this option.

4. RTGS/NEFT

Taxpayers can also make payments through RTGS or NEFT by generating a mandate form on the portal. The payment can be completed through internet banking or by visiting a bank branch.

Once processed successfully, the payment is reflected on the e-Filing portal.

5. Payment Gateway

The payment gateway supports multiple digital payment methods, including:

  • UPI

  • Credit cards

  • Debit cards

  • Net banking

Applicable transaction charges and GST may vary depending on the selected payment gateway or bank.

Conclusion

The Income Tax Department's e-Pay Tax facility provides taxpayers with multiple online and offline payment options for paying direct taxes. Whether using net banking, UPI, debit cards, RTGS/NEFT or bank counter payments, taxpayers can choose the method that best suits their requirements while completing their tax obligations through the e-Filing portal.
