The Finance Ministry announced the extension of the deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) from June 30 to July 31, 2026, as per a PTI news report. This decision follows technical issues experienced by users on the GSTAT portal.
On June 30, 2026, the Union government declared the extension of the deadline for filing appeals before GSTAT to July 31, 2026.
The move comes after the GSTAT portal faced high traffic volumes, resulting in technical challenges. With 30,000 appeals filed over 15 days, daily submissions reached 5,500 at their peak.
The Finance Ministry acted on feedback from stakeholders indicating that the portal congestion made it difficult to file appeals in a timely manner. In response, the government decided to grant taxpayers additional time to submit their appeals without undue burden.
Since its launch in September 2025, GSTAT was set up to expedite the resolution of disputes that previously awaited processing by the High Courts or Supreme Court. The tribunal includes 31 state benches and a Principal Bench in Delhi, presided over by Justice (Retired) Sanjaya Kumar Mishra.

Currently, over 4,80,000 cases await filing before GSTAT. This tribunal represents a shift from the earlier system and is expected to reduce the time taken for dispute resolutions between the taxpayers and the GST department.
Taxpayers are advised not to postpone their appeal filings to prevent last-minute inconveniences due to potential portal congestion. Planning submissions in advance can help mitigate technical difficulties.
The Finance Ministry extended the filing deadline for GST Appellate Tribunal cases to July 31, 2026, in response to user issues on the GSTAT portal. In the lead-up to the new deadline, 30,000 appeals were filed, indicating significant user activity.
