Vodafone Idea has extended its strategic collaboration with Ericsson to upgrade its postpaid infrastructure while accelerating nationwide network expansion, as per news reports.
The initiative forms part of the telecom operator’s ₹45,000 crore capital expenditure roadmap focused on expanding coverage, increasing capacity and lowering customer churn.
As part of the agreement, Ericsson will deploy its cloud-native “Ericsson Charging” platform to help Vodafone Idea scale its postpaid business and deliver what the companies described as “innovative postpaid offers.”
The expansion marks a shift in Ericsson’s engagement from primarily prepaid systems to becoming a pan-India supplier of charging solutions across both prepaid and postpaid segments.
The arrangement also equips Vodafone Idea with new Ericsson Telco IT AI applications, giving it “greater control and flexibility over its charging platform.” The AI tools will support anomaly detection in billing processes, order fallout prediction, capacity forecasting for the telco cloud stack and intelligent usage analytics.
The companies said the system will be “more flexible, scalable and cost-efficient,” enabling faster rollout of new services while improving operational efficiency.
Beyond billing modernisation, the partnership covers network enhancement. Since 2024, Ericsson has deployed additional 4G and 5G sites, added capacity layers to existing infrastructure and rolled out high-performance small-cell towers across 10 telecom circles.
These upgrades are expected to strengthen indoor coverage, improve data throughput and support Vodafone Idea’s continued expansion of 4G and 5G connectivity.
The companies stated that the partnership will support “ongoing network expansion across the country,” with deployments aimed at preparing the operator’s infrastructure for future 5G Standalone implementation. Financial terms of the expanded agreement were not disclosed.

By broadening its collaboration with Ericsson across charging systems and radio infrastructure, Vodafone Idea is reinforcing both revenue optimisation and network capability. The combined focus on postpaid transformation and 5G readiness reflects its strategy to enhance service quality while building a more scalable and technology-driven telecom platform.
